Grottoes International Humanitarian Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that brings “Special Smiles” to children with special needs by providing much‑needed dental care. The program helps cover the cost of dental treatment and anesthesia, whether performed in a hospital setting or a dental office. Hospital facility costs are not covered.
Dental Care for Children with Special Needs
The program is designed for children under 21 with one or more of the following conditions:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Muscular Dystrophy and related neuromuscular disorders
- Intellectual Disabilities, including Down Syndrome for profound to 2 years overall delayed. Documentation from a licensed school psychologist or physician may be required.
- Dental care for organ transplant recipients, pre & post
The Enchanted Lantern
In the early days of the Grotto, members would hang a red railroad lantern in the window to indicate the location of their next meeting. This tradition inspired the adoption of the Enchanted Lantern in 1953 as the emblem representing each contribution of $50 or more. For nearly 60 years, the annual sale of Enchanted Lanterns has been the backbone of the Humanitarian Foundation’s fundraising efforts.
The Toothbrush Program
The Toothbrush Program allows Grotto Members and their Ladies to interact with the public and introduce Grottoes International and its charitable mission. Toothbrushes are distributed in public areas, giving members an opportunity to explain who we are and what we do. Donations are gratefully accepted and placed into the charitable trust to help fund the Dental Care for Children with Special Needs program.
